Welcome to the world of fungi!
There are thousands to millions of types of fungi, but we're going to focus on the kind that help trees.
This kind of fungus is called mycorrhizal fungi. Together, they help each other out. The fungi helps the plant reach hard-to-get nutrients, while the plants supplies the fungi with carbohydrates (like sugars!)
If you look in this photo, you can see the relationship between fungus and tree at work!
Mycorrhizal fungi also help break down dead plants and animals, so they can be recycled back into the earth. This process helps put nutrients back into the soil so trees and forests to keep growing strong and healthy.
