Growing a Tree

Trees grow their best with proper nutrients, water, and sunlight. Without these, trees must form relationships with other organisms in order to grow healthy. Let's find out more about the life of trees.

First, let's plant a tree!

To plant a tree, we first have to talk about soil.

Soil contains nutrients like potassium (K), phosphorus (P), and nitogen (N); all which help the tree grow. Without these nutrients in the soil, trees have to turn to other sources, such as fungus, to get the food they need.

Let me check the soil...

Hmm...

The soil has the nutrients we need! We can plant our tree!

Great work! Now let's give it some water.

Congrats! Your tree has grown!

To grow, your tree has used 2 types of vascular tissues called xylem and phloem. Xylem transports the water and nutrients up through the tree. Phloem transports food from the leaves to all parts of the tree.

If there is a lack in nutrients, trees must find other ways to make up for that loss. To do this, tree roots form what's called a symbiotic relationship with fungus. Let's learn more about what fungus can do for trees!
